This year we are doing the KOM Century Challenge from Planet Ultra on a tandem . These are timed events, the 3 combined times determines the final placing. Our goal is to finish the three stages and collect power data on our tandem. These events will be quite challenging as a lot of climbing is involved and at least the first two of the three events don't suit a tandem.
Stage one: Mulholland Challenge
109 miles, 12000 feet of climbing. Steep climbs with sustained 12-14% with pitches up to 18%.
Stage two: Breathless Agony
114 miles, 12000 feet of climbing. The clock stops at the top of Onyx Peak, 74 miles and 12000 ft of elevation gain. The 40 mile descent is neutral.
Stage three: Heartbreak Hundred
100 miles, 8500 ft of climbing.
First Stage Mulholland Challenge
We did the Mulholland Challenge on our tandem for the first time this weekend. This is the first stage of the King Of The Mountain Century Challenge. This year the original route was changed due to some construction on Schueren Road at the top of Stunt* The new route was the same all the way to the bottom of Deer Creek and Pacific Coast Highway, from here the new part was up Mulholland from Pacific Coast Highway and then down a little on Decker to the sticker stop and then up Decker making a right on Lechusa and down Encinal Canyon all the way down to Pacific Coast Highway, and now we went up Decker returning the original route.
Data from Mulholland Challenge.
Bellow you can see data recorded during the Mulholland Challenge on April 11th 2009. power data is missing for about 7 miles ( It looks like the iBike was knocked out of place on the mounting) For this century we lacked some preparation as I suffered from IT Band Syndrome for about 5 weeks prior to this event.
